terms

The deal
This World and You is run by an individual in Victoria, Australia (“we”, “us”). By using the site you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it. Questions: hello@thisworldandyou.org.
Age
You must be 18 or older to write a note or make an account. Children may not hold accounts.
Writing a note
- A note is public once approved. It never shows who wrote it.
- Notes can’t be edited. A note stays even if you delete your account.
- Write in English, to one person, by first name.
- Leave out full names, contact details, addresses and anything private about anyone.
What’s not allowed
These rules cover notes, memories, reports and anything else you send us.
Never allowed, and we report it to the authorities:
- Child sexual abuse or exploitation material: any sexual content involving someone who is, looks or is described as under 18.
- Material that promotes, supports or instructs terrorism or violent extremism.
- Material showing or promoting extreme crime or violence, like murder, torture, rape or violent kidnapping.
Also not allowed:
- Instructions for, or promotion of, crime or violence.
- Material about making, selling or using illegal drugs.
- Sexual content or nudity of any kind.
- Intimate images of anyone shared without their consent, real or fake.
- Threats, harassment, hate, or encouraging someone to hurt themselves.
- Personal details about anyone, or pretending to be someone else.
- Anything that breaks the law or someone else’s copyright.
- Ads, links, spam, or automated use of the site.
What we can do
To keep the site safe, we may, at any time:
- decline or remove any note or memory;
- limit what an account can do, or suspend it, for a set time;
- close an account and stop that person making a new one; and
- report material and accounts to police, eSafety, NCMEC or other authorities.
Anyone who shares child sexual abuse material or terrorist material loses their account and is reported. We check notes with automated tools and people. We can make mistakes. If we got something wrong, tell us.
Memories you add
With an account you can add words, photos, drawings, voice recordings and songs to your galaxy. Only add things you have the right to share. That includes photos of other people. Recordings are always private. Only upload audio you have the right to use. The same rules apply to private memories.
What you own
You keep ownership of what you write and upload. You let us store, copy, resize and show it on the site and in link previews, anywhere in the world, for free. For public notes this includes images and videos we post to share the site. This permission lasts as long as the content is on the site. Notes stay after you delete your account, so the permission for them does too.
Removal requests
Use the report form, no account needed, or email hello@thisworldandyou.org. You can ask us to remove:
- a note you wrote;
- a note about you, or that names you;
- something that breaks these rules or the law.
We look at every request and act quickly. If you leave an email, we’ll write back and tell you what we did. Where the law asks us to, we pass a complaint on to the writer, if we have a way to reach them.
Intimate images shared without consent
If an intimate image or video of you is on the site without your consent, real or AI-made, we will remove it within 48 hours of a valid request. We also look for copies and remove any we find. Email hello@thisworldandyou.org with:
- your full name typed as a signature (or the name of the person acting for you);
- where it is: the galaxy number or link, and which photo;
- a short statement that you believe in good faith it was shared without your consent, with anything that shows this;
- how we can reach you.
You can also use the report form and pick “It’s about me and I want it removed”, but email lets you include everything above.
Copyright
If something here uses your copyrighted work without permission, email hello@thisworldandyou.org with: your signature; the work; where it is on the site; how to reach you; a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t allowed; and a statement that your notice is accurate and that you own the work or may act for its owner. We remove it and tell the person who added it, if we can reach them. If they think we got it wrong, they can send a counter notice to the same address. We close the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe.
Copyright agent: This World and You, hello@thisworldandyou.org. (Registration with the US Copyright Office pending.)
Reports and complaints
Use the report form to flag anything harmful or illegal. Say what harm it causes in the details box. You can also complain there, or by email, about how we handle safety. We keep the identity of people who report private. We look at every report. If you leave an email, we’ll write back to say we got it and what we did.
Online safety in Australia
The eSafety Commissioner is Australia’s independent online safety regulator. eSafety can help remove serious online abuse, image-based abuse and illegal or restricted content. It also handles complaints about how online services, including this one, follow Australia’s online safety codes and standards.
Report to us first if you can, using the report form. If we don’t fix it, or you’re unhappy with how we handled it, you can go to eSafety at esafety.gov.au/report.
Not a crisis service
If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number. Help lines by country are on our help page.
Donations
Donations are voluntary gifts, handled by Stripe. They don’t buy anything. If you gave by mistake, email us.
The site itself
We run This World and You as it is, and may change, pause or close it. We’ll try to give notice before closing. We may close accounts that break these terms. You can delete yours any time.
Some laws, like the Australian Consumer Law, give you rights no terms can take away. These terms don’t limit them. Apart from those rights, we aren’t responsible for what other people write, or for losses from using the site.
Law and changes
These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia. When they change, the date at the top changes, and big changes also show on the site. Using the site after a change means you accept it.
